♢ An Icelandic writing system inspired by Elder Futhark and Runic scripts.
My name is James, although you may know me as Xsugatsal. I have long been fascinated by language and script creation, even before I knew of the formalised online communities of r/conlangs and r/neography I was creating scripts and languages.
I created my first script when I was around 12 years old. This was of course none other than a cipher of the English Language. I continued to experiment with constructed languages and scripts and eventually began working on the Yherchian language - my longest project to date. This language and script has been evolving for the last 11 years and I will continue to work on it into the future! I have worked on a few other main conlangs of my own such as Visso, Cnur, and a multitude of scripts both personal and commissioned.
I am a hobbyist of linguistics and have a fascination for the languages and writing systems of the world. In my day to day life, I am a Web Designer and hold a bachelor's degree in Product Design. Combining both graphic design and linguistics is where my passion truly lies. In the last few years, I have been fixated on the digitisation of my scripts and blending art with the science of language and neography.
I had an idea a while back to create a script for Icelandic. Icelandic is interesting in that linguistic purism is heavily followed, which both creates for some fascinating linguistic heritage and also isolates the language from the outside world's influence, which is both positive and negative).
I took inspiration from the alchemical script, along with runic and futhark scripts to create this. It has also come to my attention that the angular nature of the script also puts it in a similar box as the script used for Greek aesthetically.
The script is called Gleymd íslenska; meaning forgotten Icelandic. I wanted to create the sense that this script existed a long time ago in Iceland and was forgotten in time.
